Am I the right fit for this job?
Most waterfront jobs involve teaching at a basic level. The most important qualities of a waterfront specialist are strong swimming skills and a familiarity with one or more watersports. In addition to lifeguards and swim instructors, camps have roles for windsurfing, sailing, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, waterskiing, kayaking, banana boats and many other watersports. You’ll also need to be capable of passing a lifeguard certification course to work in waterfront, so you need to be confident in the water. Waterfront staff often need to arrive to camp earlier than other staff members for additional training.
You need to have
Existing experience with at least one water sport
Confidence teaching
Strong swimming skills
Maturity
Bonus points for
Lifeguard certification
Membership of a relevant club (sailing, kayaking, etc)
License to drive a motorboat
Skills in sailing or windsurfing
What does a watersports instructor do?
If you’re hired as a watersports instructor, you’ll spend activity periods on the lake with other waterfront staff (lifeguards, instructors and senior staff).
Alternatively, a waterfront role could involve work at the pool as a swimming instructor or leading kayaking/canoeing trips on the river. It’s common for waterfront staff to have another activity that they assist in during free periods or rainy days, like blacksmithing or fencing. So not only do you get an awesome tan from the summer, but a pretty cool LinkedIn profile too.
