Saddle up for summer

Get ready to teach kids aged 5-17 how to horseback ride, trek through the mountains and care for their horses. You'll also be responsible for stable management and making sure the horses are given some well-deserved TLC.

We work with specialist horse riding camps, where campers hone existing equine skills, and with general camps, where horse riding is an option. In these cases campers will have very different levels of experience... so no two lessons are the same!

Am I the right fit for this job?

This is the perfect summer job for anyone who loves horses and who wants to share that love with others. From exploring the surrounding areas by horseback with the kids, to helping them progress on their skills, to caring for the horses, equestrian roles at summer camp are incredibly fun. Plus, horse riding instructors are always in demand, so your chances of getting hired are pretty high.

What does a horse riding instructor do at camp?

Weather-permitting, counselors usually run lessons throughout the day. Specialised horse riding camps want to show campers what it’s like to own a horse – so daily chores and care are expected from each camper, for you to oversee. You’ll also lead a daily ‘barn lesson’, in which campers learn about breeds, disciplines, training techniques, equine management and first aid. And you’ll help to organise a horse show at the end of week, where campers can show off what they’ve learned.

In general camps, where horse riding is one of several activities, you’ll use a simpler approach – like teaching kids how to approach and mount a horse. Since most campers won’t have any experience, the lessons will start off slow to ensure they get the basics right. You’ll be responsible for the kids and the horses throughout the day… so pay attention!
