Teach what you love
If you love teaching and have a knack for arts and crafts, you could be hired as an Arts and Crafts instructor. In addition to both craft work and fine arts, your camp could offer activities in film making, photography, copper enameling, jewelry making, fashion design, pottery, and just about any other art you can think of. Campers will all have different backgrounds and abilities, so it’s important that you can teach campers a variety of skills.

Am I the right fit for this job?
Arts and crafts are very popular among camp, and every camp has an art department. While some campers may choose to focus on a favorite type of art, it’s common for camps to introduce kids to new things they’ve never tried before- think ceramics, woodwork, stained glass and blacksmithing. To be an Arts and Crafts instructor, you don’t need to be the next Picasso, but you should have basic skills in a variety of arts.
You need to have
Creativity, particularly in coming up with full lessons
Confidence teaching the basics of a variety of skills
Patience & enthusiasm
Bonus points for
Previous experience teaching arts and crafts
Technical background in ceramics, stained glass, pottery, woodwork, looms, sewing, or another unique skill
Experience using equipment and tools
What does an arts and crafts instructor do?
As an arts and crafts instructor, you will work in the arts building to teach campers new skills and learn new ways to express themselves. Nearly all summer camps offer a variety of arts and crafts, so it’s not just drawing (well, some days it could be.). In the same week, you could teach campers how to mix watercolors, dip candles, paint beads and create a relief. As an arts specialist, you could also be hired to teach a particular type of art, such as ceramics, silver smithing or photography.
While it’s important that you enjoy art, you don’t need an existing talent in fine art to be a fantastic instructor. It’s more important that you can help campers develop their own abilities, so if you’re very creative and love to teach, this could be the perfect job for you.
